Firebird—The Story Firebird , a ballet performed in many versions since the original production premiered in Paris in 1910, is from Russian folklore and is set in Russia long ago, in a land of primeval forests and at a time when magic seemed not only possible, but real. Prince Ivan has three brothers, who bully him into hunting the magical Firebird. When the brothers go o hunting in the forest without Ivan, they are captured by Monsters and turned to stone by the evil sorcerer Kostchei, who holds them as captive warriors he can wake when he needs them. Ivan has set o in search of the magical Firebird. There she is, at the gate of an enchanted garden. The Prince watches her itting about, snatching one of the tempting fruits from a tree of golden apples. She is so intent on the apple that she doesn’t see the Prince. When he captures her, she begs for her freedom, presenting him with one of her magic feathers to summon her if ever he is in dire trouble. Ivan soon has some- thing new to take his attention: lovely princesses who enter the garden. They pull apples from the tree and play a game with them. Prince Ivan surprises them, admires them, and they all dance together in patterns based on a khorovod , a Russian folk dance. Especially attracted to Yelena the Beautiful, Prince Ivan dances with her and is soon in love. As dawn breaks, the Princesses, who are under the control of Kost- chei, warn Prince Ivan that he must leave or the sorcerer and his evil retinue will capture him. A prince in love doesn’t run away just because he’s told there’s trouble ahead. When Prince Ivan lingers in the garden, Stone Warriors, the Monsters, and Kostchei erupt into the garden and overpower Ivan and the Princesses. Ivan is hurled to the ground, and all seems lost. But Prince Ivan pulls out the magic feather to summon the Firebird. True to her promise, she rushes in to rescue the Prince. She ends all the whirling, leaping, and dragging by magically putting all to sleep. The Firebird tells Prince Ivan that to destroy the evil Kostchei, he must break the egg containing Kostchei’s soul. The sorcerer ghts to protect his egg, but the Prince shatters it. Everything goes dark. When the darkness breaks, the light reveals a great celebration. The brothers, who had been turned to stone, are restored, and all rejoice that the evil has been lifted.
